I have a 48' Reitnour that had belonged to an outfit in Utah that ran Canada a bunch. The front axle will slide back to make a closed tandem, but the back is fixed.exhausted379, Gatordude, Big Road Skateboard and 5 others Thank this.

I have nothing to offer other than the 48ft fontaine i had with dsv was a slider. Since they ran canada alot. Dont remember the weight but my empty full of fuel waa just under 33k.. also not sure of other nw states but with the montana bridge law i could scale out 84k and be legal on 5 axles... I was almost always heavier than that to be truthful. And we abused the f out of those trailers and they held up well . It was a combo maybe all alum would be a bit lighter idk.. im sure none of that is helpfulGatordude, Big Road Skateboard, cke and 4 others Thank this. -
Have run both step and float 53’s. Some fixed Cali and slides. The slides went forward to a tandem. Currently run transcrack step 53’s with fixed Cali spread. Empty we are at 33.500. They are combos, so heavy, like 11.400. Have a Kenworth T680 mid roof in front. 45k get us real close to axel out, pushing 79k. Some places we go in Idaho require an off track permit. Get an annual on that. Can go to “D” with the setup.
For the most part, have found the 53’s really don’t gain us anything in the market. Still have to load as if it was a 48 to get the max weight on it.
No rear overhang allowed on 53’s, unless permits are issued.
If it is a Cali spread, you’re going to have 10 feet behind the last axle. You gotta watch the weight past that point. You can quickly get over axle with that setup.
If you do go with a slide, it is better to have the rear axle go forward to make a tandem. The long spread can be your friend. Don’t know how this would play out in Canada. When going up there, we needed permits. I personally have never been, I was deemed an undesirable person and not allowed in with a truck. I can go as tourist. Hmm, follow the money on that one.
Also take a look at western trailers out of the Boise area. I have been in front of both 48 and 53’s. Good trailers, not cheap.Gatordude, Big Road Skateboard, cke and 5 others Thank this. -
If you buy both you can be sure that you'll always be hooked up to the one you don't need while the other one is at home. Hope that helps.Friend, exhausted379, High Stepper and 14 others Thank this.

Then as soon as he gets rid of the one he never uses, a customer will call and need that one exclusively for a job for the next 6 months straight... Pretty sure thats how trucking goes 100% of the time
