You guys might think this is crazy...

I'm picking up my last Landstar load on Monday up in Jackson, WY. The load is a passenger loading ramp on wheels, weighs around 3900 lbs. Agent said he's moved them before and the best way is to hire a tow truck to pull it on and off.

I figured I could buy a winch, make it removable by building a frame that drops into stake pockets. Pull it up on the trailer, use a snatch block to pull it off.

Probably cost about the same as hiring a tow truck on each end, but at least I have a winch now. At 8500 lb rating it's probably only good for stuff that's the size of a pick up truck or smaller. Good enough for me.

Eww...that's ugly. I'm glad you caught it before you started loosing teeth or shrapnel through the idler and the rest of the gears.

 

I wonder if you might want to weld a piece on to your tubing that runs lengthwise down the center of your trailer for a foot or so to prevent the winch from twisting the tubing in the stake pockets.

Another option would be to unhook the trailer and use the tractor with a snatch block to load and unload.

 

Broken crank in the compressor?
