Yes,correct, they both basically accomplished the same thing, just did it in different ways. The early IH T/A was a hi-lo shift on the go,accomplished by a hand lever, mechanical controlled band planetary shift unit, great for tillage, get into some tough soil, pull the TA back into low,get through the hard spot, shove er' back into high, away you go,never miss a beat. You could split each of the five gears . Later IH T/A's with increasing diesel power, used hydraulics to do the shifting, same basic principal of operation.
If you look at the pic of that D-17,you'll see that big lever on the right, pulled back it was in low range, all the way forward,it was in high, accomplished by clutches, not planetaries. It had a spot in the middle, where the tractor would stop travel, and if the PTO was engaged, the PTO would continue to run. This was AC's way to get a live PTO back then. This worked good if you got into heavy corn while picking or chopping, stop or slow the tractor, and let the picker clear its throat, pto still running at full speed.
Every manufacturer had some new gimmick back then to try and outsell the competition. Ford Selecto speed,John Deere powershift,Oliver over-under,Massey Ferguson multi-power,they were all a little different, mostly accomplished the same thing.
Clear as mud, right, lol.jamespmack, BigBob410, Oxbow and 17 others Thank this. -
