I have a switch just like the on/off switch for a Jake, but when you use the switch it is all or nothing. With the lever you can apply whatever amount (of air) that you want. There is a cylinder with a diaphragm that controls the amount of oil directed to the retarder. Air pressure is used against the diaphragm to move that cylinder.
I have another truck that has Jakes as well as a retarder, but it doesn't have a dash switch for the retarder, just the shorter lever next to the trailer brake handle.

Your new avatar is screwing with me. The Star Car with the 7cz and Monster fits my mental image much better.

Far as I'm concerned..... a CB is as much a part of the truck as the steering wheel!! Owner of that company needs slapped so hard his eyes pop out.

Tell ya'll what now, ya'll been busy today!!! Didn't think I would ever get caught up reading through the pages. I feel like a mouse that's been having sex with a giraffe now, between the kissing and the screwing he wore his self out :)

Pretty much all bulk places I deal with either require a CB to communicate with the driver for positioning, or will provide a two-way radio temporarily.

I remember those times..... enjoy your time together fully, my daughter will be 30 this month. Wife and I had chili this evening as well, mighty good in these cooler temperatures.
