As a shop owner and mechanic I could rebuild but, I never would. The closest I would get is replacing a brush pack in an alternator. Here is the problem, maybe 90% of all accessories could be serviced at the shop level. You really need all the equipment to assess the parts and pieces. How many repair shops have meger's to check windings, bench centers to check shafts, flow benches etc.
As a shop owner I want a high level of confidence that the part I replace is up to the task. Anyone who has been in the biz has encountered the problem child part or vehicle. Taking the chance that the alternator is fine, just needs brushes/diodes is a gamble. My shop time is much higher than a rebuilt component to begin with, my vendors also reimburse me in most cases for labor on replacement part failures.
I see the ability to do component repair from the days of yore, I also know there are things that are just best left to specialist. I happen to have a number a machine tools, few mechanical repair shops have a lathe, let alone milling machines, precision grinders, test equipment etc. It is still not worth my time and effort to do a repair on anything short of a unicorn.
