Long post warning
So, bit of a blah day. Gray skies all day, little taste of sun right as it was leaving and arriving at the horizon on both ends. Got my unload off in Ray in record time (26.7 ton in 1h10m) and got myself all the way back to Faulkner to reload and out to Ashern for the night.
Came to a bit of a realization today, I'm bored. Bored of everything I'm doing and where I'm doing it. I was having some down days back in December and January and couldn't figure out why I was feeling the way I was feeling.
I strive to constantly challenge myself and be challenged by those I work for and with. I'm a problem solver by nature and need new and interesting problems to solve.
I also need to be at home with my wife. I came to the realization that I took this position as a highway driver because we needed the money, and my first priority was to make sure my wife and I could live a happy and healthy life together. I realized today I spent the latter half of last year telling myself I "loved" being out on the road, and I "loved" everything I was doing, so I could continue to do it and continue to make money to build our future.
But now I know that wasn't the case. You guys that can tolerate these conditions for as long as you have are heroes among Men. This lifestyle isn't meant for the faint of heart, nor is it really meant for any family man (or woman). But you all do it because you know it's for your family and it makes you happy. That's just incredible.
I'm ready to start a new chapter in my life, a happier, healthier and stronger chapter that puts my wife and the family we plan to build first, ahead of everything else.
I need to get back in shape and keep myself from becoming a man in his 30's who can't even get down on the floor with his children because of a bad back and knees. I need to fix this now before it ruins the rest of my life. And I can't fix it if I'm working 65-70 hours a week, with little to no time at home, nor time to myself at the end of the day.
This new opportunity I've been presented with is something I couldn't have even imagined myself going for this time last year. Autoshifts, Cascadias and city work? Who am I and what have I done with myself?
I spoke with our mortgage broker today and he said switching jobs won't have any effect on our ability to get a mortgage, so long as I'm making the same amount or more (not a problem there) and I'm not on probation.
So, the stone is rolling down the proverbial hill and gaining speed at a drastic rate. These next two weeks are going to be very busy getting things together and working on taking this new path the fates have steered me towards. I've spent the last 4 years learning to trust in my instincts as often as possible, and they are screaming at me saying this is the right thing to do, and I'm not going to ignore them. -
Something you been working on?
