I’ve heard the sand box guys are really screwing it up for the pneumatic guys. But, that’s all here say on my end. I’ve got no knowledge of that world first hand
-
Thanks @Grubby! They still running the FAST Series out there, that was awesome to see tracks actually working together for a change. On of these days I'm going to make it to Attica and Indiana Sprint Week - love non-wing racing.

@OLDSKOOLERnWV explain to dummies like me how those hit/miss engines work and what was with the "release" every few strokes?
-
If ya ever make it up here to the sprint car capital of the world give me a hollar.... I haven't been for years....I have a friend that I used to work with that is on the board.
-
The “release” is the engine firing. The flywheels you see there keep the crank turning when it’s not firing. A lot of machinery uses flywheels to store energy like a hay baler for example.
When a hit and miss engine is running the governor holds the exhaust valve open so it has no compression or intake. When it slows down the governor lets the exhaust valve close and the next stroke pulls the intake valve open by vacuum drawing in the air fuel mixture and initiates the spark. It fires then the governor holds the exhaust valve open again until it slows down. They’re surprisingly powerful and efficient -
I'm fixin to hit 38 in a few more months, and I already wish for 35 again. Sweet jeebus the things on me that creak and snap and hurt and....
Oh well, here's to another 50 years of waking up every morning with all of the signs that I'm still alive. (pain).Slowpoke KW, BigBob410, ShooterK2 and 20 others Thank this. -
Had a friend wanted me to meet up with him and ride to Daytona. I have no interest in getting harassed by Johnny Law.Slowpoke KW, ShooterK2, G13Tomcat and 14 others Thank this. -
a valve is held open by a governor until the speed drops to a predetermined setting then the valve closes to allow one or two power strokes. that is the release you hear. after the power strokes the heavy flywheel speeds up, the governor again opens the valve until needed again. they where noted for a good power source for slow speed belt drive operations with good economy with a variety of fuels of differing quality.SL3406, Slowpoke KW, BigBob410 and 18 others Thank this.
