I remember his barn, huge!! Still had the ropes and blocks in the top from its earlier life of storing hay. My buddy Tony and I were in awe. I love that old stuff of yesteryear.

Me too. It's amazing what they were able to build. And massive projects like the Suez and Panama canals. With just steam and picks and shovels and wheelbarrows.
And horse's and dray animals.Last edited: Mar 19, 2019

Yes quite a few in this area too running the older engines. Most are throttle governed but still flywheel engines.
Our forefathers were actually very intelligent. This crankshaft and flywheels in my yard came from a Oil City Southpenn 1/2 breed engine I use to own. Those wheels are 5 ft in diameter. Notice the flywheel on the left is thinner than the right.... the left (thinner) flywheel was the original steam wheel. When the early oil / gas wells were being drilled steam was normally used. After the well was developed, someone had to go pump it. That meant fireing up the boiler and building steam for the engine, this took time. Then some guy says hmmmm.... I can minimize that time at the well pumping.
So, they designed another cylinder/ piston for the engines, that’s where the name 1/2 breed comes from. By switching out the steam cylinder for a gas cylinder they could then use gas from the well (free fuel) to power the engine and save lots of time. Problem was the steam flywheel was not good at getting it through intake / compression strokes.... soooo they added a bigger heavier flywheel on the other side and problem was solved. Takes about 10-15 minutes to fire up a gas engine versus 45 minutes or better on a steam engine. Sorry to ramble.SL3406, 2CAN, Isafarmboy and 22 others Thank this. -
