He wanted to gut the emissions system and redo the whole exhaust but it was decided they should wait til the warranty was up first. That driver doesn't work for them anymore. I think they've decided to abandon thier outlaw ways anyhow, they decided it's cheaper just to let drivers quit and go away and slowly replace them with outside contractor trucks.

 

Steam is a whole different type of power for sure.
Every year we get a few that hook up and put on a show. I can't judge steam power worth a darn. When you think it's over he's still got 100' left every time.

And they are about the craziest #### thing to try and load on a trailer under it's own power!! Lol.

The looks you get from 99% of people make it worth it. Stop at a red light and the people alongside get that wide eye panicked WTF is THAT look, cause your dripping water all over the trailer and venting off left over steam.

@old iron In the early 90s I used to move a tractor very similar to that one to an annual parade. I had to winch it on in the early morning so the guy didn't have to build a fire in it too early. Never thought to take a picture. It had rubber street pads on the wheels.

 

I don't think I ever looked at the guages. I wanna say with no water it is around 30k.
It's one of them good deed type things. I'm at the threshing show with the trailer anyway so they toss me some fuel money to haul it 20 miles too and from. My favorite load of the year.
They are real picky on chaining it down. Anchor to the wheels only, because they don't want any stress on the barrel.

We do the same thing to getting it there. He's got a bar built that attaches to a loader bucket and pushes it on. The steering on these old girls is pretty wild! And the center band on the steering rims likes to split deck boards...

We've probably hooked a dozen steamers to the pull sled over the years.
On a hard clay track the best traction is the ones that got smooth rims with the big rivets. They hook up like you wouldn't believe.
The rubber tractor tire belts and the angle iron cleated ones tend to dig a hole.
It's a whole different feeling when they are dragging you down the track. You can feel every time a piston fires.
And they all got a habit of lightning my John Deere umbrella on fire!
