I've been really disappointed reading about the purposely poor quality tricks that both Ford and Chevrolet did to save a penny, even though it was obvious that the shortcuts were going to cost the customers a lot more than that.
None of those Bozo's in Detroit got serious about putting out a competitive product until the foreign brands were way ahead.
When the government put the new CEO in charge of GM he gave an example of how bad the culture was in the boardroom. He made the point of how they had no concept of the urgency of the situation. He made a certain Meeting mandatory. One of the Executives said ' I won't be there. I have a scheduled appointment elsewhere then. It's already been scheduled. '
He responded with " Be there or don't come back. "
In truth, I admire good machinery no matter who or where it was made..Slowpoke KW, Grubby, 1951 ford and 15 others Thank this. -

Agreed, Have you watch The Cars that made America series. Really good, really shady stuff by all 3. Now the investment into Saturn was the only shot at competing with overseas. Saturn worked and then they tanked it on purpose.
But Dodges rust and have a funny sounding starter.Slowpoke KW, Grubby, 1951 ford and 13 others Thank this. -

Have you ever seen the series of books called Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader ?
Tons of short trivia. Some more interesting than others.
They covered the story of how one of the Big 3 ( I believe it was primarily GM ? I'm not sure.) bought up tons of trolley lines, scrapped the Steel rails that were easy to remove, scrapped everything they could, vacated the Rights of Way and all so they could sell Diesel buses to the same communities that had to have public transportation. Which they had just deprived them of. Which was a much better system in most ways. Plus it was already paid for and extremely affordable.
That is referred to in the movie Who killed Roger Rabbit, although it's not very clear, at least to me.Slowpoke KW, Grubby, 1951 ford and 12 others Thank this.
