I hate working on sideways engines, I’ve been having issues with my local shop installed 2003 Honda Pilot rebuilt transmission recently shuddering going into lock up and not wanting to release 4th or 5th when coming to a stop. There isn’t a lot of detailed info online, especially for the symptoms, and the rebuild didn’t come with new solenoids and switches so I bought the solenoid kit for a cool $300 with everything I need.
I figured CPC solenoid A and B were the problem. They control all the shifts and the springs can get weak after a rebuild and not modulate pressure correctly. Pull the battery, and air box to get to the CPC. It is located beside the transmission dipstick in a tight location, surprise surprise.
Hands covered in transmission fluid, it’s easy to drop tiny bolts into tight places. I pull out all the Jerry rigging stops, from my telescopic magnet to get dropped bolts and tools to using a paper towel piece inside the socket so the bolts don’t fall out.
Take her for a test drive and the problem still persists. No codes, no check engine lights, what the frickin frick. Using my super duper deductive reasoning, I decide I’m going to replace the Torque converter clutch solenoid. Thank goodness it’s so easily reached. You can see the connector directly between the two hoses, and yes they are a toasty 190 degrees. Ah that feels nice on my skin.
As I look down after the initial test drive I see fresh transmission fluid running down near the CPC solenoid I already replaced. Trace it back and the original torque converter solenoid I’m about to replace is loose and leaking, it’s been slowly backing it’s way out. Tighten it down and now the problem is solved. So glad to have spent $300 for nothing.
I am mad that the shop I paid for the install didn’t double check all the bolts before putting it in, but I am glad it’s resolved. @stwik I just ate three cold chicken tenders, it’s the first thing I’ve ate today. Been busy, but I do make a delicious pancake from the premade mix.Last edited: Apr 14, 2019
