For some reason, your post brought to mind the new(ish) Petro on the south side of Columbia SC. They opened it with great fanfare, as it's restaurant was one of their first Quaker Steak & Lube locations inside a truck stop AND it had a bowling alley. Sounded like a great stop, except it's not a place I would ordinarily be stopping for a 10, so it was quite a while before I was able to visit and check it out.
When I finally had a reason to stop there, the reality did not measure up to the idea. For the reasons you mention, that it was a move intended to attract more local business versus provide drivers something the others don't. The place was packed to capacity with locals. Barely room at the counter to sit and order a hot meal. Then everything on the menu was bar food. Coincidentally, the counter was actually a bar, so there's that. Maybe some that enjoy an adult beverage with dinner might like that, I'm indifferent. Not abstaining, just not my choice. Anywhoo.. just forget about bowling or enjoying any other part of the QS&L facility. The lines were just too darn long for everything, and I got no time or patience for that. Overall a nice facility with clean bathrooms, but the rest of the place could burn down far as I'm concerned.
Not sure about any correlation to pay parking. I'd even go so far to suggest someone willing to pay for a space might be more likely (or lazy enough) to just walk inside and have a $15 plate at the Country Pride, versus hiking across the street or down the road for a #1 combo for half that. I do agree that some of these existing in-house restaurants are bringing about their own demise. My personal favorite? The TA in Jeffersonville OH has been one of my favorite stops, due to it's location midpoint of a 2-day trip and it's (IMO) less crappy than the alternatives in the area. I usually get in late, of course parking in a paid space since it's late and half the lot is reserved and that's the only thing left. Don't mind that as much as some, but I usually get up early and enjoy a four course breakfast buffet feast. Just remember if you want to do the same and enjoy some bacon with your first course, don't forget to order it when you ask for your coffee. Apparently they make out better pissing off regular paying customers versus supplying bacon on the buffet for shoplifters filling their pockets on the way out for bacon sandwiches later.1951 ford, cke, PoleCrusher and 20 others Thank this. -
