I don’t think you’re the right type of person to spell “check” that way. :biggrin_25523:

Have y'all folks been following the efforts of Gen Motors, Mercy Benz alive ! .... And Mazda ( among others ) to bring a HCCI engine to market ?
Mazda has apparently solved the challenge and is launching sales in Europe currently with sales in North America coming later this year from indications.

But Moose ? What's a HCCI ? Is that a new hi tech hickey like we used to leave on our girlfriends neck ?

No. It's not a hickey like that John Deere 4:20, thanks for asking.
What a HCCI is, is a gasoline engine that runs like a diesel engine at certain times, which leads to significant gains in fuel economy. Under light load conditions the power stroke is initiated by the high compression in the cylinder instead of the spark of the plug. This is where large gains in fuel economy lie.

Mazda has found a different way to engineer this HCCI into a working car. What they have managed to do is get a very tiny droplet of fuel to raise the compression ratio just enough to initiate the ignition process inside the cylinder.

Now, on the face of the evidence and how we generally understand the ignition process, it would be easy to think that that one little tiny droplet of fuel ( which is Still ignited by the spark plug, just like " normal " ) is still being the same thing as usual, it's definitely not. The fuel economy proves the difference between the two modes of operation. Remember, car engines are not always operated in light load conditions. When accelerating or under heavy load conditions the power stroke is still initiated by the spark plugs, just like the usual way that we're used to.

    Neat stuff eh ?

Oh ! I forgot to tell y'all that HCCI stands for Homogeneous Compression Combustion Ignition.

Coming soon to a Mazda dealership near you. I hope that they don't have any bugs or glitches in the system they've started to build.

No Pie, you can't fill your fuel tank with Whole milk. It needs Homogenized.

You know how people throw this phrase around all the time, "Professional Driver"? They seem to get lost or can't agree on the 'professional' part. "Hey, I hold the steering wheel and stay in my lane, I must be professional. Sure I'm 200 lbs overweight and smell like arse from 25 ft away, but I have my CLDs and drive a truck!!!"

And here we all thought that no one could seriously be as dumb as Jethro.

Dual points do a decent job at 9k rpm on a 45 yr old Kawasaki 900 too. I wish I had $1 for every time someone asked me about these, hanging on the side of my toolbox next to the dwell meter LOL.
