Why do you think that pirate treasure has pearls mentioned often ? The Black Pearl is the main ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies for a reason.

Even Google is confused. Clams, oysters , mussels and scallops are all related. Bivalve mollusks. The first entry on Google says that Clams do NOT produce pearls. The second entry says that they DO.

From what I remember reading eons ago, freshwater pearls are less expensive because they are more common, because they are purposely grown. The tiny bit of grit is placed inside the oyster on purpose.

Saltwater pearls are more expensive because they are less common and the grit doesn't get inside all the mollusks. It takes longer to form the pearl and they don't all get harvested.

Freshwater mollusks are "farmed" and have no where to get away from the human farmers.
