I don't really feel like digging around for proof right now but basically when Penske and/or GM ( I know GM sold out. Not positive whether Penske did. ) The Corporations changed the name for legal reasons. Usually not by much so as not to lose Customer Recognition of the Brand name. Understandably.
GM ( and Penske ? ) sold Detroit Diesel to the Corporate Conglomeration that is basically thought of here in the US as Mercedes Benz. MB owns a bunch of Brands, including Freightliner, Western Star, Detroit Diesel and many, many more. Volkswagen owns a ton more. Not only that but most of the primary families who own Controlling Interest in VW/ MB/ BMW are intermingled. Sometimes by blood, but They all own shares of stock in each others enterprises .... or HAVE owned shares of stock recently. It's also a bond with the Robert Bosch Corporation in many cases. Bosch is the Developer of many of the Hi Tech Advancements in Vehicles in the current era. The tech that VW used in Dieselgate is only possible because Bosch already had the hardware ( and probably software ) already developed. What isn't owned by those companies is probably owned by Chrysler-Fiat, as far as Name Brands from Europe that we would be familiar with here in the US. There are likely some exceptions to this, but not many I bet.

It truly is a sad state of affairs we've gotten into. We fight it here as well.
Long gone are the days of telling someone to kick rocks when they screw up too many times. You have to document and have coaching/counciling (hand holding) sessions and accept that most people are sensitive little creatures that must be handled with kid gloves, etc, etc, etc. Or, according to the sensitivity training they required us to sit through, you're supposed to.

We've had to ease up on the new guys over the last few years.
Apparently, "I'm trusting you with my life and expect you take be able to handle a high stress situation, which may include an ### chewing when you screw up, because I don't fully trust you yet...." was too much for some of our younger, sensitive members.

You don’t need proof. I understand GM 2 stroke diesels were built in Detroit by a division called Detroit Diesel somethingarother. I’m just saying they weren’t called Detroit Diesels until after Penske bought them. I’m probably wrong but That’s the way I remember it anyway.

A standard set of wrenches and 2 screw drivers, 1 of each, and you can darn near tear those engines down. With....enough room to put your feet inside the fenders.

People are exactly like cows. Mindless, lethargic, large bellied, mouth breathing follow the leader types whose only concern is where their next meal is coming from.

Not really sure how I rank here with age. I definitely don't rank with y'all in experience in trucking. But I'm old enough to silently hate the weakness of the generation behind me. And road experienced enough to know that the younger drivers coming out of whatever CDL school they're coming from are scaring the crap out of me. They don't pay attention to their surroundings on the road or in public outside of their truck. It's frustrating and disgusting. I'm sure the vets here have more to say about it than me. But it seems like the younger guys lack the life skills necessary to even attempt driving these 40 ton missiles. Obviously there are exceptions. But crimany man. It's ridiculous. And if I see one more slob in pajama pants, bare feet, and flip flops strolling into a truck stop I might explode. Self respect apparently went out the window.

Hits the nail on the head of why I'm not a fan of most people.
