In my opinion it’s much better to do it this way instead of in front of the tandems. Much less flex right there. And I was happy to see it wasn’t just a straight cut. It looked pretty decent to me. I don’t see a problem. I’ve never stretched one, but in vocational school this is the way we were taught.

We had an old Dodge like this one behind the barn, it belonged to uncle Lester’s cousin uncle Kinner. When I was young I would craw up in that old Dodge and just drive away.... in my minds eye lol. Like yourself I put a lot of miles in that way.

The egg woman who passed away last year was in her 80’s. She spent so many days laying in the sun (and drinking) that her skin was rough as corrugated drain pipe!! Never seen no one that bad before, like one of those crocodiles.

The forces between the tandems are very high when turning. Your always dragging and skidding that back axle just like a trailer. Right in front of tandem is less than ideal too. Really you wanna go to or passed bunk crossmemeber or back of cab. If your double framing for heavy work, it needs to go to or past trans crossmember at a minimum.

Edit. Best to add or integrate a bolted crossmember at the splice. A weld, or just bolted alone is not acceptable. Welded with bolts, or fish plate. Diamond shape plate welded and bolted. Yes the angle cut is correct. I only knew one guy that could and would butt splice them. But his welds didn't break and he is dead.
