Sorry I'm late to the dance.
I would shut off the main breaker to the AC units. Vacuum the outside and look for any discoloration of paint. Inspect fan for any damage to fins. Depending on your ac unit. It could have a fan located on the top and connected to outside housing. Watch when you move this you don't disconnect a wire.
If unit has no fan on outside housing be cautious when lifing the housing away from the coils.
I would highly suggest not spraying the coil unit yet. You need to vacuum out the debris and use a flash light to shine into the fins. Look to see where you have debris. Also look at the fins make sure none are folded over. You can easily fold the fins from water pressure.
You can accidently spray water thru the coils pushing debris and dirt into the fan motor.
If and when you do spray the coils , spray top down motion and only short sprays of water.
Once you are satisfied with your water use. Inspect the bottom inside of unit for pooling water remove as best you can . Make sure your electrical parts are not wet or dripping water.
If you can afford to let it sit for an hour to air dry before re-powering unit at the breaker box.
Good luck.Last edited: Jul 21, 2019

A couple of things on doing work around electrical stuff. Before you start any work verify the the power is off. Harbor Freight cheap or sometimes free multimeters work for 250 and lower voltage. About voltage, since the 1960's 2 wire single phase has been 240 volts, phase to neutral 120 volts. When checking voltage, THIS IS IMPORTANT, only use one hand. Keep your other arm at your side not touching anything metal or ground. If you are shocked, the current could travel through your body, 50 volts to the heart can kill a human.
