I don't really feel like starting a new thread, 2012 Fontaine stepdeck. Asking $28K, 22.5" rubber. No tool boxes, dunnage rack or load leveller, salesman said he might find a load leveller to throw in. They safety the trailer in house, which I can't say I trust. Fixed tandem axle, I think I'd prefer that over a fixed spread axle. I don't want a sliding axle set up.
Seems like a pretty bare bones trailer for the money. There's not a lot of tandem steps out there for sale, closed or open. I asked about the lower deck height when aired up. I asked about cracks and abuse, salesman of course said they go over it when they sticker it. What else should I ask before I go look at it?

I don't know what you are hauling or where your taking it, but that in my opinion would dictate weather or not to get a closed tandem. Also, id want to know what king pin setting it is (12, 18 or 24....) because with a closed tandem step, you are gonna want to know how to load a trailer like that to keep legal on your trailer axles.

My opinion, 10-2 spread is the only way to go on a step. I'd personally didn't mind a sliding spread. Not because of California, but if you are in a situation where your running light back there, it's nice to if you wanna close it up. Can be little easier to get around with and saves a little on the tires.

How long is It this trailer? Is it a combo, steel or aluminum? 48, 50, 51 or 53? Wood deck or aluminum?

53' combo, aluminum deck. Good call on the kingpin setting.

I hate sliders because of how many stake pockets and winch track you lose. Never fails you need a strap or chain right over a wheel well. I should ask if the upper deck has sliding winch track full length.

Having owned a closed tandem step, I wouldn't buy another. @snowman_w900 is correct about weight distribution.

I wouldn't buy a closed tandem step, you'll constantly be heavy on your wagon or having to split loads onto your top deck.

    Run away.
