It's just what they do.
I doubt that any normal, rational, person with a drop of common sense really believes the news much. They still can't get a weather report correct, forget do some fact checking, or not try to make a mountain out of a mole hill. The government in Canada also overly controls the news content, and forces them to be extremely left wing, so it is very biased to the left, almost to the point of being communist based news.
