Honestly, I'd pull the sensors out and inspect them. Not sure where they are on an E but if they read off a timing gear, there's a chance there could be some fine metal particles stuck to the ends (most cases the sensors are magnetic). That could throw off the readings. As could improper sensor gap or damaged teeth on the gear/ring. Also give the wires a gentle tug at the plugs. If 5lbs of force tears a wire out, that was likely your issue.
