My wife is headed back to her parents this morning. They got a mixed bag of good and bad news on Thursday. The oncologist told them the cancer they found by her spine was a "secondary" cancer. He described it this way because it is feeding on another cancer that they are trying to pinpoint the source. He thinks it may be breast/lymph node (in the armpit area) in origin. They're going to do a biopsy Tuesday morning.
This was the good news part, because that is fairly easy to treat. The bad news part was, he's not sure what/if anything can be done with the cancer on her spine. They're going to do a PET scan next week to see how far up and down the spine it has traveled.
He won't say anything official, until he has the scan results next week, but the "Read Between The Lines" conversations my wife and daughter had with the oncologist are leading towards it has spread to her brain.

I can't imagine being told I have cancer, and then being told I have it somewhere else too?

I'd be willing to bet we have all lost a family member or dear friend to this horrible disease, I have lost several of both. It becomes hard to find the words, at least it does for me. It takes such a toll on everyone involved but there is always hope and you just try to be as strong as you can for them.
