I have a friend that is about 6 months from order his new Star and is thinking about the Cummins instead of the Detroit.
I went Detroit because it had least amount emissions issues. This is my second and not really had any issues with them.
Now they do eat batteries because the battery ones live right next to the dpf and it always gets so hot down there that I am lucky to get a year or so out of them.
Where is everyone #5

Interesting, I wasn’t sure if Cummins was available in Western Stars. My batteries are behind the DPF on the new truck. There’s about 6” in between, hopefully that won’t screw things up.7-UP, Al. Roper, Crusader66 and 12 others Thank this.

It will shorten the life but maybe not as much as for me - running out west in 100+ temps for 7 months a year

Over dinner the other night in Grand Rapids was talking with an old retired hand. Turned out he was a steel hauler his entire career.
Well I lent this old hand my ear, you ask an old guy the right questions and they'll open up, tell ya their life story. Most enjoy it, but won't talk to a punk.
Anyhow, he was telling me how throughout the '60s and '70s, he pulled doubles hauling steel out of Cleveland into MI. They would set the coils in each trailer so that you could shift the weight around if ya got caught dodging the scales. Sometime a ticket just couldn't be avoided, but they were making enough money it was worth it.
I won't mention the company, but he said they came in and cut the rate from 1.20/hw to .60/hw. Well then it wasn't worth it anymore and that was when he sold his truck and got a company job.singlescrewshaker, 7-UP, Al. Roper and 16 others Thank this. -
