If someone wasn't changing the oil and filters correctly, possibility, but not the norm at all.
My new 77 small cam 350,would go 400,barely 450k,between in frames. Up to 100k,almost 0 oil consumption. 100-200k miles, east to west coast and back, use about a gallon of oil. 200-300k,gallon when I got to the west coast, gallon when I got home. 300-400k,ahh.. check the oil every time I fuel, and add some. by 450k,usually,it's coming apart for an inframe, was almost cheaper than the oil use. Call Cummins on Washington Boulevard in Baltimore, order 6 sleeve and piston kits,3 recon heads,6 injectors, water pump, set of bearings and a gasket set. New sleeve sets, around a hundred bucks a hole,x 6,heads 200 bucks each exchange,x3,injectors,30 dollars each x6 exchange, main and rod bearings around 350. Less than 2 grand for parts, with oil and filters, nice weekend project. Start in on it Friday,Monday AM,ready to go back to work, providing no serious counterbore,or camshaft issues. Good time to look at everything, while the pans off. Old Cummins was like working on a big Briggs and Stratton, just a so simple no BS engine.
Oil and metals have gotten so much better,N-14's and others now go a million easy. Had my N-14 500 red head 20 years (jeezus time flys),and I never had the heads or rocker boxes off, greatest money making engine I ever owned. Enough old fart Keystone beer Friday nite ranting.
Anyhow, two old pics I recently found, don't think I've posted them here. First is my 85 4300 Eagle black glider I built, guts and drivetrain from my 77 Eagle, not sure of the year of the pic, probably around 1990. Ford guy might be able to date the pic by my sons service truck year. Second pic is of my 95 9300 Eagle N-14. Still pretty new there, haven't put the chrome trim around the bottom of the sleeper and cab,or the headache chain and tarp boxes on. Dam I miss that truck! My usual old crappy amateur photography.

The steel haulers around here would have loved them to last 250k. Lots of other people had better longevity. Dont take that the wrong way, they were happy.

Death knocked in Kingman, was I still wasn’t stressed enough for a spa treatment. Still trying to figure out what kind off of balance blend of stressed and horny one has to be to stop here...

Got one for ya...... ask your mechanic what it means when he pulls a rod cap off, and the bearing just falls out of the rod. Then get back with me and tell us what he says...... oh while your at it..... ask him at what position the clip rings on the wrist pin should be installed?!! 12:00 or 6:00
Or should they be 3:00 or 9:00?
