White's (Petro), in Raphine. Been an interesting week. Monday, showed up at shipper to load their 20' can. Shipper owned can and had no markings on it, or seals on the doors. Told them we needed to do some research, but the ports probably would not let it in without markings, or seals. Found out I was right, so they went to Home Depot and bought enough to do all four sides. It was an old HanJin can and those numbers were on the dock reciept, so that's what we used. I supplied them with a couple plastic seals, I still carry from my van days. Got to Elizabeth and found the SeaLink office, with no problem. LS faxed my application, no problem. Only problem, you need to know your PIN for your TWIC and I forgot mine, I've had it so long. Had to drive over to the TWIC enrollment office, about 2 1/2 miles away, to get it reset. Got back to the SeaLink office, had to register a Comcheck for the $25 fee, as they don't take cash. Got to Maher Terminal, where the forwarder said to go and no dice. Not only wrong terminal, but wrong port. Turns out it needed to go to Global, in Jersey City/Bayonne. Wonderful, stuck in north Jersey and no place that I knew of to spend the night. Went back to Expressport Plaza, where the SeaLink office is and figured I'd park there. It is lit up pretty good and there is a Port Authority Police office there. Saw a cop and asked him about being able to spend the night, or would I get run off. He said no problem as long as I was parked along the fence, which I was. He said they run the ones off that double park.
Got up early Thursday morning and found my way to Global. No problems. People were pretty decent to me when I told them I had never been there, before, and did not know what their procedures were or where to go, but if they would explain it to me, I'd be happy to comply. Guy in the "Trouble" office even came outside and explained the layout and where to go, to get my can off. He even told me that I could leave through the "Bobtail" exit as I was pulling a flatbed, not a chassis, and would be empty.
After that I decided to head to Bordentown, to hang out. On my way there, I got a Load Alert for this load. It loaded just south of Bordentown, on Friday and the shipper even had a place to spend the night.
Was scheduled to load at 0800, but they were ready before that. They even have a guy that gets up on the high stuff and runs your straps, so you don't crush anything and your straps don't get cut. They were skeptical, when I told them to load the high stuff on the back, because that was the heavy stuff and I can't slide anything to the steer. After loading, they move you to their airport and have you park on the tarmac to tarp. I showed the guy my scales and he saw that I was right about the weights, 33,000 on the drives and 32,000 on the spread. He was glad they listened, to me, and didn't have to reload it. Two guys take your tarps and not only get them on top of your load, but spread them, then leave you to do your own tieing down. It was pretty cool.
This week had its share of problems, but nothing major and it all worked out. -
