Yes I just looked up the gps mounting rules. Nothing can be mounted or attached to the interior windshield, not even ezpass. Oh well, I guess I’m getting a bracket mount.

I see drivers all the time with the BIG GPS mouted in middle of windshield. How can they not think it's a ticket for blocking the driver's view ?

California has the most enforce law on that usually. If I remember correctly in CA it has to be in lower left corner of the windshield and can't block more then 7 inches

Parts and Accessories Necessary for Safe Operation; Application for an Exemption From Traditional Trucking Corporation
    [IMG]
Action:Notice of application for exemption; request for comments.
Summary:The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requests public comment on an application for exemption from Traditional Trucking Corporation (TTC) to allow a Global Positioning System (GPS) device to be mounted on the interior of the windshield of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) within the areas allowed for ``vehicle safety technology'' devices. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) require devices using ``vehicle safety technology'' to be mounted (A) not more than 4 inches below the upper edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers, or (B) not more than 7 inches above the lower edge of the area swept by the windshield wipers, and (C) outside the driver's sight lines to the road and highway signs and signals. GPS is not considered a ``vehicle safety technology'' under the definition in the regulation, and as such, GPS devices are not permitted to be mounted on the interior of the windshield and within the area swept by the windshield wipers. TTC believes that the exemption will maintain a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level of safety achieved without the exemption because the GPS device is approximately the same size as vehicle safety technology devices, and the current mounting location is much lower in the vehicle which causes the driver to look away from the road to view the GPS device.”

So the cup suction gps is really not allowed to be put in the interior windshield. If the gps was mounted by a bracket, I think, then it cannot block the area swept by the wipers. The area large enough that is not swept by the wipers is in the middle center, upper most top.

Who made this rule? Seriously? March 2018, final provision.

Can't be more than 7 inches and can't be in wipers path.

    I got points for it.

I use mine more for mph than anything. It's like a HUD. I think it's much safer than looking down at your dash. I have a phone mount right beside mine on the dash. Never had a problem, but I run mainly Tn. and Ky. Georgia has weigh in motion so I never go in.

That's exactly what I do. I had a level 2 inspection in Kentucky once and before he let me go the inspector told me I would get a ticket for my GPS if I got stopped in Ohio. Ohio and Indiana seem to be the two states revenue-ing on this right now so I pull my GPS off if I get beeped into one of their weigh stations.

people don't know not to block their field of view out the windshield??

windshield is for looking out at the road. not a wall for mounting crap.

the top of the dashboard has vents that need air to come out of them.
    they are defrosters/defoggers.

it is not a desktop/file cabinet for more crap.

541D9884-F47C-4DFA-B539-9DA3A24D2C3D.jpeg My GPS is no more of an obstruction than my fender mirror, near as I can tell. And I do believe that our bodies have the capability of moving, too, so that we can look around these objects, if needed. Probably wouldn’t get me out of a ticket if given one (which I haven’t, I’ve never been warned about the device), but I try to appeal to logic, not always the law. Sometimes there’s a huge gap between the two.

I put a flat mount on my dash right above the radio to my right.
I can glance over and see it if I need to without restricting my main field of view out my windshield.
