You talking radio or antenna or both. I guess both makes sense. Dang common sense is trying to sneak up on me again. Can't have that. Don't wanna be labeled as "different".
-
The 959 I had didn't last very long. It's not dead, but there is a short or cold joint on the board somewhere. You can squeeze the chassis and the display will dim, or the meter will jump around. Just not quite right.
Took it to a shop because I don't have time... Said a plug was loose. The problem still wasn't fixed.
Fragile radio IMO.RustyBolt Thanks this. -
A friend of mine runs a Galaxy 959 in his 979. Has it more than six years, IIRC. We ran hellacious Texas oilfield lease roads. Original coax and nothing antennas. But you can talk to him at ten miles from almost any direction.
If it weren’t for the size, I’d not ever recommend anything else for a standard CB.
Hope your luck gets better. I keep trying to change mine by throwing an entire paycheck at it, ha!RustyBolt Thanks this. -
Radio will be grounded with negative wire. Take care off the antennas just adjust higgh on that and. May have too put some washer on the ground. There is planty explanation on YouTube how too doit
-
Battery ground and ground plain are two totally different types of ground..
-
WHAT???? Dude ya gotta explain that last part some..The washers in the ground part... -
Take detailed pics of your set up as it sits now..Let see up close how ant is on the bracket and where bracket is in mirror arm....Where is power supply comming from, and what ga of wire..What coax are you useing??
Chances are its a combo of issues..How and where antenna is mounted, coax could be crap, radio may just be starvin for clean power..Maybe your transmitting with a way high swr..Hard to say without more detail..
Does radio squeel at all or lights dim when you key up,does it get hot quickly.... -
Well, the 959 was last installed in my 9200 and is in a box at the house. I have a Cobra 29 in my T600 that I drive now. The antenna WAS a new Wilson 2000(?)(stainless wire type). The coax WAS a new Wilson 18'. And as stated before, it WAS mounted on the chrome mirror bracket with a typical aluminum clamping antenna mount. The power was fed through 14 gauge wire with online fuse directly from the hot post at the fuse panel and grounded to the negative at the fuse panel. The SWR was set by me, as stated, using the meter on the radio. Never noticed squeal. Never noticed dimming lights. Don't remember it even getting real warm, let alone hot.

In the future go with a lil bigger wire than factory..Always help to over feed power than mot enuf..Never been a fan of goin to the fuse box, much preferr direct to battery..
So we are almost sure its how its hooked up that causeing a short radio life..
Next time run 10ga (which should be approx 15-20ft)....
Did you have the plastic washer directly between ant brack and top of stud..What type of stud and learn how to test coax to for shorts and lower quality..
Im kinda stuck on the lack of power to the radio idea.....
Love others to pop in with ideas to but thats where im kinda stuck on..
If you het the chance, find a shop with an antenna analyzer and let us know those results..They should be able to test resistance on coax, tune ant (more to it than this swr bs everyone talks of) and maybe find an issue your not seeing..
Kinda doubt you can have enuf bad luck to go through a few radios in even 10 yrs so its something your doin or not doin..Just gotta figure out through trial and error i guess..Let start with maken sure the radio is well fed with ample power..None of the ciggy lighter stuff or fuse box bs..Fuseable link direct from battery...
