I’m interested in a new line of work and I’m trying to figure things out like where’s could I realistically work as new driver and where it would be best to get training. Having a family, I’m interested in minimizing a gap in pay so I’m willing to do the work to get it right the first time.
I’m a veteran, honorably discharged in ‘05 but I know I’m way past eligibility for GI Bill and the same for VA Voc Rehab which is a 12 year eligibility. Is there anything else out there for a long separated vet in Indiana to help pay for a CDL? Is there a best type of place to get a CDL? Where is a good company to work for with my experience level in far south Indiana (I65 region- Henryville to Clarksville, Jeffersonville)?
I know I’m peppering with questions but I’m trying to get the ball rollingrolling and looking for guidance.
Thanks for the help.
Where to start, southern Indiana

Indiana WIOA Program will pay for cdl school, free to you.
If you can't afford to miss any paychecks, can attend cdl school on weekends.
Takes longer, but fills a niche some drivers need to get the career started.BrothaTrucka513 Thanks this. -
In Indiana, you can access free CDL training through the following programs:
- Ivy Tech Community College: They have received a federal grant of over $85,000 to cover 100% of the costs of CDL-A training, permits, and licensing for eligible students in certain counties.
1 - Workforce Ready Grant: This program offers tuition-free training in high-demand job fields, including CDL training.
1 - DriveCo CDL Learning Center: They assist Indiana residents with significant barriers to cover the costs of CDL training, making it accessible for those who qualify.

These programs provide excellent opportunities for individuals looking to obtain their CDL without incurring costs.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential
A TWIC card, or Transportation Worker Identification Credential, is a security credential issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the U.S. Coast Guard. It is required for individuals who need access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels regulated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA). CDL drivers who pick up or deliver cargo to ports must obtain a TWIC card to enter secure maritime zones without needing an escort.
