My cruise speed is 1600 rpms many times it's at 1700. Still trying to figure out how less than 1500 rpms a person doesn't need a damper. Seems like the torque, stress, and strain from the twist down at lower rpms closer to peak torque is where one would really need the benefit of a damper? Yeah there are many things one could replace on a truck they were inframing. I'd think something as cheap and simple as a damper to protect a $10,000-$20,000 motor would be a no brainer.

The damper reduces the torsional vibration, it slows down the speeding up and slowing down of the different ends of the crankshaft.
The modern cranks are made so much better than they use to be, the steel is better, the tempering is a lot better, that does not mean that sometimes they make mistakes. Cat had a problem Detroit also, detroits problem was that they put the key way in the wrong place, they recalled thousands of engines. Older Cummins would break the crank if put under full power below 140 degrees oil temp.
If you want to change the damper go for it, but if the engine has warrenty you had better ask the warranty provider if it is OK.
    Just a thought!

i get where you are coming from, but respectfully disagree. As for the asking if it is ok to change out the damper if the engine is in warranty, not sure one needs to "ask" for permission and how even changing it out would affect warranty. The equivalent is if the OEM recommends, say, 20,000 mile OCIs, and a person decides to change the oil at 10,000. Do they need to ask permission? Or if the OEM recommends changing the air filter at a specific time frame, but a person changes it earlier? Is that a threat to the warranty? Replacing a damper is not going to affect warranty. True, the damper may not actually be bad. So what. The new one sure isn't either.

If the damper is bent, dintted or when removed and bounced off the tire it ratles, it is junk if not it is good. I have removed hundreds because of a noise, we are talking viscous dampers, never found the noise to be the damper. Noise and vibrations will travel a long way in a truck, I have seen more "U" joints cause a noise and you would swear it was at the front, a rock in the motor mount. There are a lot of things that will cause a pulsating noise. You always want to remove the fan belts if looking for a noise.
