I really wanted to try Watkins but they didn't like my gap filled employment history.

The problem with ABF is they have a casual board and it takes time to get anytime in. Once you have a steady job with them it is the best way to go in my opinion.

Personally, I recommend taking any company that will hire you for the first six months. Then start looking for your second tier job. After 2 years get with a real company and after 3 buy your own truck and lease on.

I wouldn't work for ABF, but that's my decision. New meat spend more time at home waiting on a phone call to come to work than they do actually working. If you don't show up at work within 2 hours of the phone call, you're fired. You're on call 24/7. That's the way most of those outfits operate anyway; Yellow/Roadway, ABF, etc.

Hopefully that is the plan. Got to start and see how I deal with the job itself.

Yup, did that on the railroad for years. Bad as it sounds, it works out even worse. The call will always come at the worst time, it's like they're watching and waiting for the moment when it hurts most (sex, good meal, family emergency, etc). You'll never know you had a day off until it's over.

And the merry go round never stops. With ABF that means two solid years of that before they "give" you vacation.

If you have gaps in your employment history you should blast applications and pick from "the best of the rest". Watkins Shepherd is a very good outfit.
Whatever you do, stay with your first company a minimum of one year. Show stability in your employment. Start focusing on your next step UP on the ladder.

Have a PLAN. WORK the plan.
