From what I've seen on I-10, I-55 and I-59 here in south MS, those ConWay pups are running!!:yes2557:

Yeah, we're busy. I was off Friday night traveling for weekend plans and it was Con-way after Con-way and FedEx Freight after FedEx Freight all night long. I've been on stretches where we're running with 8 or 9 heading North and I see 8 or 9 heading South in a two minute stretch.

I know you're into the safety stuff and we're now at 1 DOT reportable for every 1.9 million miles driven which is very good overall and incredible to me given the nature of our operation. Just got an email forward for a Kansas City driver that hit 2 million safe miles - in the article it stated that we now have over 100 2 million milers and over 1500 million milers which is pretty good considering the majority of the service centers didn't open till 1994 or later and I would estimate we probably have about 5,000 to 8,000 line-haul drivers.

We have our share of idiots here, but overall we have a great group of drivers that can handle the equipment as the numbers reflect.

    Honesty,....

If I were in your shoes that would be my first call,...You might have to start out on the dock but they might even help ya get the class a,...Not sure but it's a thought,.......

If your dead set on otr,....Than I would probably look at Millis or Schnider,....I haven't heard near as many complaints about either and I hear there stcklers for safety,...Which is a sign of a good company in my opinion,...

Millis wouldn't take me because of where I live and neither of the CCs I was accepted to attend is on Schneider's list of approved schools. I think that Schneider would have been my choice between the 2 if I'd had the choice.

I'm in agreement with the fish..lol.. Some terminals will help you get a CDL and some of the ones that don't will still hire you once you do. Like he said about OTR, I would add Roehl to that list but it's been almost 7 years since I was there so a lot could have changed. That's what I did though - Roehl for a year and a half and Con-way ever since so I've managed to make a pretty good buck driving and only had two jobs using Roehl as a way to get experience and get the OTR bug out of me.

Roehl was near the top of my list of carrier hopefuls. Again, not taking students from my area. Bethann (?), the recruiter I talked with, was great. She said I could go ahead and send in an app just to have on file. If, after 30,000 miles OTR, I wanted to talk to them again, they could update the app and look at me then. Swift has ended up being the carrier that I have the surest of chances with and is the carrier that IS hiring in my area that has the diversity and safety scores I'm looking for. If one of the CCs I was planning to go to had courses this summer that fit my schedule better, I'd probably wait a few months more, take a course from one of them, and open up my options. I just don't want to delay getting started until late fall. This summer is prime time for me PLUS, like a kid (that I'm not), I'm ready to do this thing.

I'm waiting for them to get all my paperwork in so I can get a seat in the Millington Academy. I hope to hear something final late next week or early the following week. I'd like to start at Millington May 31. We'll see what happens. I have Plans B, C and D though!

I'm confident no matter what route you take it will work out well for you in the end. At some point you'll find the job that works best for you since no matter where you start, I know you'll stay focused and continue to research. I took the starter company route and found a good job that I've been at for a while and have no plans of leaving as long as I'm behind the wheel of a truck - two jobs in over 8 years and I can honestly say driving has treated me pretty well and there's no reason it can't be that way for most people.

When were you at Roehl, jake?
I started my illustriously dubious truckin' career at Burlington Motor Carriers in 2001...until they went bellyup in 02'.
Then on to Cannon Express...they went bellyup in 03'....LOL.
Then I pulled a reefer for a year out to the West Coast...hated it.
Ended up at Roehl in 2004. Worked there until 2005 until I took the LTL plunge.
Roehl wasn't bad all-in-all...at least back then.
I was dispatched out of Ellenwood, Georgia.
Carl Elliott was my dispatcher then Linda Davis.
    Small world ain't it? :biggrin_25519:
