We live in Northwest Florida (the panhandle) & driving jobs here are somewhat hard to find. We really like Mcelroy because he would be home every friday for a 34 hr reset we know they come to our town because one of their trucks parks up by walmart every week (would it be okay to put a sticky note on his truck asking him to call my husband so he can talk to someone who drives for them?) also they pay .40cpm (including your tarp pay) once you get past the 7 weeks of orientation & training, but there isn't a whole lot on them to research but the majority of what I have found is positive if you can make it through the 7 weeks. They do not offer tuition reimbursement but you make more for 9000 miles he would make $3600 (so if you pretend he makes .30cpm thats like $900 tuition reimbursement LOL) If he gets a prehire this is his #1 company. they don't offer bonuses that I am aware of. He can also park the truck at the house or at least in town.
Ive read good things about Roehl too & I like that they offer all the different options in type of truck however we are barely inside their hiring area and only for van so if he did switch to any of the other divisions it would affect his hometime. they pay .30cpm and offer tuition reimbursement of $100 every 9000 miles totating $2800.
plus they have bonuses you can earn. not sure where he would be allowed to park.
May sounds good too and they have a terminal 47 miles away however I think he would have to park the truck at that terminal & find a way home, also not crazy about them paying you on a comdata card however he could always make his one transaction deposit his pay in our bank account, & not crazy about their idle policy.
not going to go with TMC because they would run him like crazy, seems more like a single guy type of job.
he is 34 so still young enough to handle flatbed but he is trying to figure out a way to practice lifting the 110 pound tarp (any ideas what he could lift to get an idea)
I havent researched trans am yet
Which company to pick?

May has the terminal in Florida near you, which would be big in my book. (As for lifting the tarp, a lot of times you can get a forklift operator to put it back on the trailer for you.) It's not so much the weight of the tarp,it's the awkwardness of it when you lift it. I personally kind of liked flatbedding. (although i only did it for about 6 months) Good luck with whomever he chooses!

I went with a construction company when I first started. They had flats, vans, dump trailers, lowboys, boom trucks and pneumatics. Spent a lot of time in red dirt country tearing up equipment but it gave me an idea of what I wanted to do. It didn't pay much but it was fun and I guarantee ya it paid more than an advertising truckload outfit if you figure inn hours worked and home time

find something with at least a terminal as close to home as you can find. It can make a difference in your home time.
