How do you figure it’s free?

You can download the app for free, but it’s not legal to use unless you pay for the box.

I was grandfathered in on a promo they ran last year. No monthly fees and free set up with the box. Their cheapest plan now that's ELD compliant is $20 per month and I have no idea what the box costs.

If you want no bs, stick to what mega carriers are using.

Like being down for a couple weeks due to a daylight savings time bug like Qualcomm. Or being down a week for a year change bug like Peoplenet?

I’m sorry that happened to you. I have never in my entire trucking career had to take my Qualcomm/Omnitracs to the mechanic shop. I must just be one of the lucky ones.

The main reason why I recommend Omnitracs is because they’ve been around for a very long time. Most of the ELD companies today are relatively new, so they are understandably going to have more technical issues.

Back when Rand McNally got into the GPS business, I decided to buy one of their devices only because they owned the Rand McNally road atlas. Boy, they had so many technical problems, I decided to throw it away. A newer Rand McNally came out, so I decided to give them another try, thinking maybe this time will be different. Nope. I was wrong again.

So then I bought a Garmin GPS, and to this day it has worked really well. Garmin, as many of us know, has been in the GPS business for a very long time. I have no time for testing out anyone’s ELD products, which is why I went with Omnitracs.

I wasn't affected, but thousands were.

My point was, even the "no bs ones that
the megas use" have issues. I don't know if I've heard of one that hasn't.
I will say from drivers on this forum, that it seems the three with the least problems are Vdo, Garmen, and KeepTrucking.
Of course that's second and third hand so take it for what it's worth.

KeepTruckin has gained a very large customer base in a short time. It shouldn’t cost much to try them out. Omnitracs with the device costs about $31 per month. I’m not sure about their XRS app-based version.

Yeah, all ELD devices can have technical issues. I’m not disputing that. What I am saying is that Omnitracs devices should have less technical issues than ELD companies that started a few years ago. If not, then I take my hat off to those application engineers.

About Omnitracs technical issues being talked about more on the internet, well, that’s simple to explain. Omnitracs is arguably the most popular ELD device in the market. Just because its problems are being talked about most, doesn’t mean it’s a more problematic device. You yourself have admitted not having ever taken your Qualcomm/Omnitracs device to the shop, and I’m sure many have had the same experience as us.
