DEF was required starting on 2010 model year engines. Reason you probably didn't start seeing it until the 2011 model year trucks came out is that the manufacturers were using up old engine stock. Kind of like what they did in 2007. Some 2007's had 2006 compliant, EGR only engines and later 2007's had 2007 engines with DPF aftertreatment.

Caterpillar have got 50 brand new C15 ACERT truck engines for sale for $39,000 each over here in Melbourne Australia if you feel like flying over. Works out at $28,000 USD each. Bit heavy for cabin luggage though.

Right but some of that old stock still made it into 2011 models. Go look at truck paper you'll find plenty of 2011's with dpf cats.

I thought I would give social media a bit of a break! Consuming too much spare time!
No, haven't found the leak yet, it's a mystery. I can only wait until it gets worse. It's never been really bad, just annoying.

SAR, Diesel Dave and bigguns Thank this.

Paccar is not a good choice due to maintenance costs.
    Cat is discontinued
Isx 2011 and up is known for the short term of lifespan, I've overhauled the as low as 280,000 miles.
Dd15 made by detroit has longer life, the only problem are the engine harness, they are little gutless though but get yourself a 13 speed and will be OK.

We had 2 2010 trucks with a c15 from the factory. Last year for them though and no glider either.
