Hello my friends, i apologize for taking a long time to reply. The truck is not for me. I am not a trucker, but i am thinking about buying a truck for a good friend, who of course is a trucker himself. I created a thread about this earlier. This one is more of a curiosity of mine. Despite not being a trucker i have great interest in the field, and i was just wondering what you guys prefer as far as brands go and why. My friend will be hauling either a flatbed or a lowboy. It seems that the kenworth t800 is very popular for those tasks. trucks are different than cars you have three or more engine brands( cummins, Cat, Detroit, Volvo, Packard...) different trans (allison, eaton)..Initially i wanted to buy a volvo but was heavily criticized lol. i have an acquaintance who owns a huge machinery rental place, and we have been talking about my friend hauling his stuff.

T600, T800, 379, W9 all would suit a flatbed operation well. If he is going to pull machinery I would suggest a 475hp minimum rating, and stick to a CAT or Cummins, 3.55 rears will suffice and a 13spd should do well.... keep away from automatics as they do not do well with heavy hauls and a Volvo would be the LAST thing on my list!!!
If you find atruck with a Packard engine then I don't know what the heck you are looking at as Packard has not made ANYTHING since 1958

yeah i' m an idiot. I meant the paccar MX engine lol. He prefer manual transmission, but i was thinking that automatic would give less headaches as far as maintenance. How do you guys shift 18 freaking gears??Can't imagine driving a truck in LA traffic. Why automatic bad? I was watching a video of a roadtrain in Australia and it was a kenworth with an auto trans.
