I've only been driving a couple years, but in my limited experience I've been periods without a CB and without a GPS. CB is just a convenience tool but no prob going without. GPS has saved my butt.
Who here has a good GPS?

Unknown to me, even though I had the CB on, I only heard one comment and it was too late concerning the fact that I-30 west bound was closed for a motorcycle ride for toys for tots. There was no warning.
At least the GPS provided me with an alternate route to my delivery in seconds.
I have yet to find such speed from the map in my truck. -

My husband and I are new to trucking, and are looking to buy a GPS to help us out. I am wondering which GPS is the best for truckers. We are looking for something with a screen that is easy to see (preferably a big one), a GPS with real time traffic, and preferable lane assist. I'm just looking for some info to help us make a good purchase. Thank you so much.
What is the best GPS out there for truckers?! Any experience and/or advantages of a type/brand of GPS is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!Last edited by a moderator: Dec 27, 2009

I use a laptop with street mapping program with a GPS antenna from Delorme. True it isn't designed with truck routing software but common sense will tell you not to drive your truck on CR 100 North through farm country or take that narrow Maple street through downtown Your City USA. The software and antenna costs less than $100. And the laptop hasn't broken yet sitting in the passenger seat wedged into the rear of the seat opening. That's over three million miles covering all 48 states without the custom laptop mount bolted to the floor.
The Delorme software will also talk to you if you can't glance at the map in heavy traffic. www.delorme.com -
Might I suggest that you go to
www.dieselboss.com and check out his reviews.
You also can call him and talk to him one on one...but I suggest wed -fri as Mon and Tues are non-stop calls for him after a weekend.
If you E-Mail him, usually he will respond with a day.
Tell Him CC194217 send you.
Also, their is a thread under Electronic Connection on the Rand McNally TND 500 if you wish to check that out also.
But, talk to DieselBoss and find the one that will fit your needs and wants.
thanks

This site lists only common shopping stores... does not show truck stops.
The TND 500 cannot be bought at Best Buy, Staples, etc, etc..
Thanks,

I got a Garmin Nuvi for Christmas. Haven't taken it out on the truck yet, I'm still on vacation until Friday morning. The info I have read on it is that it is not truck friendly. That's fine with me. I really don't need the turn by turn directions. Anyone that will let a $100 electronic toy guide them under a 12 foot bridge doesn't have enough sense to be driving a big truck in the first place. My thing is my eyes aren't what they used to be in the dark, and I'm hoping this thing will tell me the name of the streets I'm on without me having to shine flashlights on street signs when I'm looking for an address at 5 am.
