Megas are ok to get started. Don't discourage your buddies from them.
Owner-operators hate them because "they haul cheap freight", but so do many owner-operators.
With a mega, cheap freight doesn't affect the company drivers pay.
Who is the best mega?

Werner, despite the bad rap. My Dad drove for them, for 10 yrs. after years as a Union Driver. He trained, and did pretty good. They paid him the same rate, for all miles ran. Trainees made a flat rate, during Training.Long trips, coast to coast. Good equipment, good health insurance. Not much home time. Guaranteed 1 day off for each week out. So, every 3 weeks, home 3 days. But He made up to $1500 a week sometimes at .30 cpm. That was 20 years ago.

The best depends on a person’s priorities. Is it the highest pay? Or perhaps the freight lanes and home time. Or least amount of time on a trainers truck. Or whatever.
So the best is individual and starts with determining what is important and seeing who matches. We all don’t want the same thing.Blue Zombie Trucker, ncmickey, HaglerFan and 3 others Thank this.
