    What?
Abstract: Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is an effective strategy to control NOx emissions from diesel engines. The EGR reduces NOx through lowering the oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber, as well as through heat absorption.

My 96 came with a catalytic converter. But somehow it ended up at the recycling center.

Lower the O2 to reduce your nox emissions lol!

    Cattleman84 Thanks this.

Best explanation of EGR I've ever heard. Kudos.

Sorry. Would have further explained if I thought a full mechanical breakdown would have been expected. Was more explaining the question of WHY not HOW. Learning the forum still. So now I know there will be some who need to have their heads shoved into the water for them to understand to drink it

Because if there's one thing an internal combustion engine needs - a diesel engine in particular - it's less oxygen in the chamber.

Me wonders what would happen if these new EGR engines were sprayed with nitrous oxide.

Crude Truckin' and Oxbow Thank this.

You must have to fabled cold gas thrusters, because it's not contaminants that make an oil dark, but the heat of a normally operating engine.

Is there possibly an aftermarket fix that is a more reliable EGR valve, and maybe a surface finish that resists deposits? EGRs do decrease NOx, which contributes to things like asthma and acid rain.
