Why channel 19?

The first radio I talked on was my parents' and it was a Browning Golden Eagle mark II I believe. Man..what a mean radio. My first that I owned was a realistic Navajo. Not as good as the Golden Eagle, but good enough ..

 

The other nice thing about 19 is that the SWR is generally set on 1 and 40, and 19 falls right in the middle.

 

Its set on 2 different channels? Geez...one of us has alot to learn...care to educate us more, genius?

 

CH19 was used long before 40 ch radios

Standing wave ratio.

It measures how much power if reflected back into your radio. Lower the better

 

blackw900 has it pretty much right from what I read on it. They originally come out back in the 40's. Then in 1958 is when they designated the 27Mhz band, It was used by all kinds of businesses and construction trades through the 60's. Originally it had 23 channels and up to 1969, truckers used channel 10 east of the Mississippi River and channel 19 west. Channel 9 was designated as the emergency channel and since the bleed over on channel 10, truckers designated channel 19 as the truckers channel in the early 70's.

It gained public popularity in the 60's and most of it's popularity in 1973 during the fuel crisis and nationwide 55 mph speed limit. Truckers would use it to find fuel and radar traps. In 1977 they come out with the 40 channel CB.

The FCC use to charge $20 for a license and then it was dropped to $4. In the early 70's there was over a million applications a month and many said screw the fees, so the gov't dropped the license requirement. That's when they started using handles instead of call signs to avoid the fees.

It was later in the 70's like blackw900 said CA started using channel 15 in southern CA and channel 17 in northern. I always used Bakersfield as the dividing line, but 46 is right there too.

I remember my dad having a 23 channel Realistic radio in the 70's. It had a big dial knob on it. I remember the Royce radio's too PB. I wonder what happened to them??
