Its just like a boss walking around the office to make sure you are working. Its not really an a front to your liberty, you have entered into an agreement that you would perform certain duties and be compensated for them. You have not been forced into this situation with no way to remove yourself from it. You can quit go work an office job but say hello to your boss sitting down the hall from you.

DOT is not my boss nor my mother

DOT doesnt care about whether i am working or not, so its most definitely not like a boss making sure you are working
if anything, DOT is nothing but a punitive body, which is the point here

this is not about work, but rather "are you tucked in for the night?" and if you are not, here is a $500 fine because you only slept 9.75hrs

i should not be controlled, monitored, nor punished in seeking work merely because some politicians want to placate some nagging nanny

Nowhere in the regs does it say you must sleep. It only states that you must be "off-duty" for 10 hours, after driving 11 hours, or being "on-duty" 14 hours.

Only stating what is written. I certainly don't sleep 10 hours, seldom do, even on days I'm not running.

I'm sure the drunks at the bar have this mentality. Who say's I can't drive. Who are they to tell me that my blood alcohol level is over the limit. Even though I was pulled over and I can't walk the straight line or touch my nose. I was driving perfectly fine. Heck everybody was getting out of my way as i drove right down the center line. Who say's I need to stay in my lane. This is America I have Rights.

a drunk is a drunk, clearly debilitated

now, to use your example, every drunk is not equally drunk and some can function, yet by ingesting alcohol he is making a conscious decision to alter his mind

now, compare that to a large majority of us here, who is to establish when each of us is tired? some of us are tired after being awake 3hrs even after a full nights sleep

there is no way to legislate sleep

however virtually all of us can agree that anything less than 6hrs a day is not rested
some may sleep 12 hrs straight, some sleep x 6 and drive 6

so my point is that firstly, the government has no right to tell grown men when to go to bed, what food to eat, who to marry, etc

nor does the government have any right to infringe on our livelihood, as long as it is not immoral (drug dealing, stealing, killing, etc)

if government wants to legislate how to address public safety, it should include the public and we are a government for the people by the people, of which it has become one lobby group over another

its a mess, and i am not in the mood to suffer peacefully while uncle sam figures out which way is up

my family should not suffer, nor should yours

and if there are drivers who clearly are up in arms about this, that is sufficiently valid to make government take note

we dont have time to have coffee klatches and call our congressmen (i personally believe they are crooks anyway)

I would argue that everyone has a difference tolerance for alcohol. But I don't feel like, so debate amongst yourselves.

The Government protects the public from sleepy truckers. Now I know when I was doing out law. I'm not sure at what hour but I started hallucinating and couldn't stay in my lane, and like you said even today after 3 hours I was ready to pull over and get a 10 hour break even after I just had 13 or so hours off. The rules are the rules and yes if you are fatigued enough you can start hallucinating and not being able to maintain your lane a couple hours after driving. So the Government says if you don't like the rules. You can figure another way to support your family. Or you can continue to break the rules and give uncle sam some of that hard earned money.
