What about the chocolate covered turds? These are people that are sweet on the outside... and appear to be a great hiring choice. However, once hired and the company gets to really bite into them(so to speak) the company finds the nasty surprise.
Good companies, already screen even the chocolate covered turds out, but unfotunately it may take time. I don't believe there is a reason for the gov't to get involved(csa) in this process.
Why CSA 2010 and E-Logs are a good thing.

How would you raise standards?volvodriver01 and Injun Thank this. -
We're not allowed to give IQ tests. That would be considered discrimination.

I like the way the PSP is doing it for experienced drivers. It lists the inspections, and crash detail that you've earned over time. You can look at a snapshot history to get an idea of what you may be hiring. If it looks like a driver is likely to be a poor performer you can save you time upfront and not hire them. As far as for the new drivers, more time needs to be spent on the companies training. Extensive training that will prepare the drivers to actually do their jobs. Not just being able to drive a truck. Drivers should have to be able to demonstrate they understand how to read a Motor Carriers Atlas, have an idea how to trip plan, demonstrate a pre trip inpsection and understand what they are looking at.....that's kind of where I'd start.

Whose company are you going to dictate the training program for? And how are you going to dictate what is taught to someone who gets a CDL independently?
All of that stuff is taught in the Swift academy. When noobs get on their mentors' trucks here, often, much of that stuff is poo-poohed and what was taught by the company is lost. Perhaps a written and practical test similar to what they had to do to get the CDL? Is there any answer?
Ask the Otter what he is up against when testing new hires for his company.ECU51 Thanks this. -
Getting a CDL and getting a job should be two different things. If the mentors/trainers are in the way of my dreams (dillusions), let's remove them.

Odd thing is,,, I'm part of the screening process now. I give road tests to potential hires. Even still, two guys I recomended didn't get hired. One guy I rejected DID!

This business requires a lot of common sense. That seems to be in short supply these days.
