Why do LTL and non-LTL local jobs have interviews and regional and OTR just have orientation?

The truck stop roller grill was probably the culprit.

Honestly, I know a couple companies that prefer to bring in applicants for driver positions. One being Bauer Transportation out of Wisconsin, and the other being Rowland Transportation out of Dade city Florida.

After reading all the replies I have just one question: If fat and socially inept are disqualifications then how did yall get in?

I agree, though: Fat and ugly people don't belong in a day cab. I'm not even sure why they are allowed at OTR megas...

Well, if you REALLY want to know…

It’s not being fat, the majority in North America are fat. It’s the socially inept part.

30 years ago, this was a rarity among drivers, even for Long Haul (what OTR used to be called). 30 years ago, a long haul driver was thin wiry, wore denim, boots and a button up shirt and had a code of conduct.

Today, you see post after post about some 30something year old guy who has never held a job, ZERO WORK HISTORY, antisocial loser, with no friends and grandma dying so he need a place to live and everyone that sees him and smells him recommends that he would make a great truck driver.

You hear guys all the time talk about how women drivers are better than most men. Of course she’s better. You never see a woman coming in with zero work history. Zero work history means no work ethic at all. You rarely see that among females.

On the other hand, there still are ton of guys coming out of the military. Once again, you have guys with their work history, dress code work ethic, social skills…

    …AND…

…a Code of Conduct. Today, the smart money for a company would be to try to attract the ex-military.

I complain about the no work history trend all the time and people just act like I'm crazy... Years ago I heard about Total/U.S. Express recruiting out of homeless shelters even.. ***Look at the thread I made asking: why pay more than fast food if trucking is hiring people they won't***

To be fair: I had good jobs before trucking and it's never gotten me anything better than those people got, so I guess it doesn't really matter... Also, I'd rather them be paying taxes than taking mine; although, I've seen drivers using EBT at truck stops

In LTL when they say "local drivers", that they have too many, I think they are playing fast and lose with that term. Any LTL company I have known of at least the "road drivers" or "long haul" refers to the guys that run overnight either pulling a 53' or doubles to their connect to swap trailers with at a per-determined place. Usually always out and back as well, just not during the day usually. Most of that running is done at night. When I went to an LTL place, it was the same though. Took a week or so from my application to get the interview. They made me think they had lots of other applicants, and they might have. But I am sure many of them probably didn't even walk in the door for the interview when they saw the equipment. It was pretty aged. I almost didn't go in, for that very reason.
