More times than not in the grocery warehouses, the warehouse also owns the lumper service. They don't save on comp, because no business would allow anyone to operate on their property without proper coverage (one exception would be if you were the owner and only employee in certain states, and even then they would require gen liability).

The warehouse saves on labor because they are effectively having the shipper pay to make the product fit in their racks. The shipper is saving money because they can cube out every load (unless weight comes into play). And one skid fits all. No need to change up automation for each customer. Otherwise they would have to do custom runs and have those orders laying around waiting to be shipped instead of skids of product that can go on the next truck.

Is it Walmart that uses THEIR own employees to work the dock, but still makes YOU pay THEIR employees to get THEIR crap that THEY ordered? I thought I heard someone talking about that some time.

Most grocery shipping contracts state that product must be delivered on to the receiver's dock

Either the driver can do it or they can hire lumper to do it. Wal-Mart charges a fixed fee to finish the contracted work.

Now trying to get a grocery receiving person to sign for a load that has not been restacked will be a challenge.

Are you always able to take the money for yourself or does it depend on the load?

Then it seems to me, to stand to reason, as drivers, we could make more money if we went into lumping instead of driving?
