Why do most LTLs not hire owner-operators?

    Yes it is, nation wide.

    Well, the LTL drivers tend to be considerably better paid than the OTR drivers.

    Because they can pay a driver way less per drop than a owner op would accept and driver is happy if he does enough drops.

    I'm only asking about OTR drivers for LTL freight, not Pickup & Delivery drivers for LTL freight.

    Do OTR LTL drivers (as opposed to P & D LTL drivers) tend to be considerably better paid than the OTR non-LTL drivers?

    when i had my truck on upsf. them company drivers would write my truck info down and filed papers. now at current gig. outside drivers are the talk of each grass roots meeting.lol

    The majority of the LTLs do not hire O\O for their excess freight. Some use the Rail Roads to handle the over flow freight. They also contract out freight with Truck Load carriers to do some of their lanes that have a freight imbalance.
    I would also say the LTL drivers make more money some over $100.000 plus a year. They have health insurance, paid vacations, paid Holidays.

    Do the dockworkers, warehousemen and forklift operators earn the same amount of money that these LTL drivers earn, at these same identical LTL companies?
    The vast majority of workers, all throughout the U.S.A., myself included, will NEVER in their lives see $100,000 a year. HOLY MOSES!!

    As far as pay goes very few drivers are at the 100K mark at each terminal. Not saying LTL drivers don't make good money but you have to put your time in before you're gonna get a high paying bid run. Also YRC uses Schneider for their outside work.

    To answer the OP, LTL companies are concerned with service failures. If 1 truck breaks down it could be up to 60 late shipments on that run, that's why they go with large carriers that run newer equipment over owner operators. If you look at most tractors bought by LTL companies you'll notice lightweight is also a major requirement.

    YRC also uses (or at least, formerly used) Covenant for their outside work. I know because I used to drive for Covenant.
