Been there plenty of times. They always find their brakes at the last minute. It's not the Big Road's job to yield to the little road.

No idea, but it was a brain-dead thing.

The first lane should always be the first lane onto the highway.
Then lane 2 is the fast lane on a 2 lane, lane 3 is the fast lane on a 3 lane...

They should count up from the right, not the left.

If I come in to a multi-lane highway it is more logical to think I am merging into the first lane, and the lanes count out from there.

Which lane were you in when the incident happened?
Gee, I just came on the highway, so I was in the first lane.
Sorry, but at the time I didn't have tome to count if there were 4, 5 or 6 lanes to calculate it.

But, what does logic have to do with anything?

I've had the same issue with my "safety sensors". I've passed exits with 25mph and safety sensor applies brakes, also pick-up overhead bridge speeds. With the Bendix braking sensors and adaptive cruise, the first week in new truck was insane. I also get alerts for objects in the road that aren't there. We already have new o e parked waiting on new computer.

I watch my mirrors and always get over for rigs who want to pass me so it's not an issue

And nobody, especially other truckers, will let you back out into the middle lane so you end up blocked in behind Mr. Magoo going 45 mph for the next 100 miles.

While it may not meet everyone's definition of logical, Traffic incident responders use plain English where possible to identify incident location and lane designations.

As English countries read left to right the lanes are numbered in that same convention from the view of a traveler with the left most being number 1.

Note that by convention, lane numbers are only used if there are more than three lanes, with three or less left, middle and right are used.

The National Traffic Incident Management Coalition is the group that agreed to the convention of anyone cares.

I did not read all the comments, but a lot of schools are teaching the Smith System. This teaches lane of least resistance.
