Why do some drivers engage in this dangerous practice?

You would have to prove that about me, and you know you can't so you act all tough in your words.
I did not get safety awards for being such. The o/p needs to know that every time one of them "rant" about truckers, they always use the word "KILL". why is that..???

Yes, as professionals we have to drive around their stupidity, and sadly, too many of the newer generation have the same "me first" attitude as ALL of the 4 wheelers have.

If a truck waits out in the left lane until you're a safe distance past more cars will begin filing around to the right which will cause the truck to get stuck out there for longer which causes the people stuck behind the truck to get all bent out of shape and start doing dumb things to try and get by. A smart trucker will know what's ahead of your car and can still see what's up there even after he's behind you. Assuming the car is going fast enough to create a gap in short order there's really very little that's unsafe about the maneuver however hanging out in that left lane can create some real poor situations real quick with impatient drivers out there.

I see this all the time, the truck is tailgating another truck and slides in to the hammer lane right on the rear bumper of the four wheeler.
The thing thats ridiculous about this kind of driving is that IMHO a sizeable % of it is a driver not wanting to set of the over speed bendix which allows 30 seconds of overspeed before safety starts snatching up those pennies!
I never tailgate, and last job I had like that I lost all my bonuses within the first week, lol. I don't tailgate and when I pass I PASS!
There are a lot of piss poor drivers out there, and constantly staring at the speedometer and texting doesn’t help matters!

Thanks for all the replies guys. In the particular instance that occurred today and made me post this, there was no other traffic for a solid 60 seconds travel time either in front or behind us. I was traveling exactly at the posted 70mph limit, he was going at least 5mph slower, posted truck limit here is 60mph. Which is why it made no sense to me that he even felt the need to come over a lane behind me. I understand that even a lot of other 4 wheeler's will pull in right behind me in order to make it into the gap, most cars and don't have adequate poewer to acelerate into the flow of traffic safely from a slower lane in heavy traffic. Doesn't make it any less stupid and dangerous though, IMO.

I have to defend the notion that I am not paying adaquate attention to the road just because I am in a car, though you'll just have to take my word for it i suppose.

Furthermore, the stretch of road where this usually happens has a significant enough deer kill rate that the state is now designing wildlife bridges, don't tell me its as easy as paying attention avoiding one of those things.. I've also come around a corner to find so something dropped in the middle of the road. If I was unlucky enough to have that happen with cars on either side if me, I would have no choice but to brake hard. So that argument doesn't really make sense, else why is tailgating even mentioned in lawbooks and regarded as dangerous?

The comment on limiters does make a lot of sense, I've noticed every single time this is done by some big company truck, so most likely housing a less experianced driver who is dealing with a speed limiter.

Oh and if there's traffic I am going with the flow, even if its over the limit, however if the road is relatively empty I refuse to take my chances being the one unfortunate sob who gets busted going a few over, not incinveniancing anyone if they can easily get around me am I?

My bad, reading your reply came across as not believing in safe following distance.

For your sake I hope you do keep a very safe distance.

In some states as we all know, left lane can be a ticket lane. so the quickness of some trying to get back over is paramount to not getting ticketed.

I understand about the left lane, and try to never pass anyone on the right, for my safety as well as theirs. This only happens when I have just passed them, on the left. Sure in a few moments I have sped up ahead of them enough to regain a safety margin, but what gets me is that it seems like the times this occurs there is no need for it, there not right up the back of another slower vehicle in front, and there's no sea of cars behind me threatening to block them in behind someone slower indefinitely. And I apologize if I offended anyone with my very real concern about death, but did you guys realize that that is exactly what is feels like we are being threatened with when there is a heavy truck following closer behind than would even be safe in a similarly sized and speced car?! Or are you able to stop your trucks within one car length if the car infront does have to stop suddenly for any number of reasons, even including not paying attention? Or is your argument that cruising along is more dangerous than pulling out that close behind someone? I really hope you misunderstood my intention in creating this post, which was certainly not to bash on truckers or upset anyone but rather get some insight into why is seems aceotsbke by some to put others in very real danger.

Problem with YOU and many other 4 wheelers, is your "panic factor". It all has to do with looking ahead and paying attention to your surroundings. if you take your eyes off your mirrors or start texting or talking on the phone, of course you will "suddenly see" something and your first reaction after the panic attack, is to slam on the brakes. But in doing so, YOU RISK certain death by your own hands.

To avoid accidents one must be constantly looking all around and also for a "way out" of anything that pops up. see a car on your side do you.>??...then why would you keep pace with him, because you want to be first, ahead of him..???

Don't put us on the hook for risking killing you, when all along, your behavior and your habits and your panic attacks will be YOUR DEMISE..........

what YOU have to understand, is that IF YOU PASS US, KEEP ON GOING, AND DO NOT SLOW DOWN as to cause us to PASS YOU...

this is a HUGE problem wit you people. you hate being behind us, as it is many truckers are already doing the speed limit, and you people think we are going slower. so what do you do..??

you PASS us, only to get in front of us, then YOU FRIGGING SLOW DOWN...???
    what's up with that shyte..???

    go about your way/business......
