That truck stopped quicker than just braking, because he started hitting a series of stopped cars. Unfortunately that happens far too frequently, doesn't it? If he hit a stopped big rig he would have stopped even quicker, and THAT happens far too frequently, doesn't it?
Meanwhile, with your stated propensity to defend tailgating, you will find yourself without forward visibility, just like that SUV driver, with no good "outs" other than hitting your brakes to try and mitigate the impact. Other than just having adequate stopping distance ahead of you the idea is to also improve your ability to see the road ahead. That's impossible if a large part of your forward field of view is the ### end of a trailer. -

I normally travel at 5+ the speed limit but that has nothing to do with someone that does not know when there are endangering the others on the road.

I don't think any of us will ever be accused of being a saint. I know for a fact I was not and am not today. However doing things like speeding and tailgating do not (cause) accidents. What they do though is reduce or totally eliminate your margin of error. I never tailgated and I advise others to do likewise. However after living among humans for 60 years I have come to understand you can't make people do the proper thing and It is pointless to even try.
Edited to add I am well aware that if a Truck Driver trys to exit a highway going too fast for the exit and rolls over that is caused by speed. Just to make clear my use of accident was for more then 1 vehicle.Last edited: Feb 23, 2018
