Leave too big a gap and you'll have 4wheelers and semis constantly cutting in. 2.5 seconds is my distance. I usually speed up and close the gap when I see someone who will try to cut in front of me to let them know that's my safety cushion.
why do some drivers tailgate?

At 2.5 seconds an entire 18wheeler can fit in my gap. That's plenty of space, and my cruise control follows at 3 seconds. No problems so far that I've been driving. -
I follow at about 3 seconds, as far as they pull into the space, That's a load of crap. There is no excuse for following to close, none. The only ones pulling into the space in front of me as a rule are the one just passing thru, and the occasional driver that pulls in and stay, I just backoff for a second to get my space back, no big deal. If you tailgate especially in a Commercial Vehicle your setting yourself up for a tragic situation that is completely avoidable, you make yourself look as though you are a new driver who just doesn't know how to drive a truck . Your a danger to the highway and you should consider a new vocation like maybe a job as a doorman at the local Wally World. But you should not be allowed to drive anything.
