How is it fuel only rose .04 for you, the fsc from the broker is a joke, it's a flat built in rate they just give you less per mile and claim the rest as a fsc.
Last year I never fueled higher the 2.90 a gal. All this year I cant find anything under 3.20. Mom and pop cheap fuel just means more fuel fulters
Draw a line from Montana, down through Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico and west texas,... For open deck those are NO GO states for me. Nothing west of Lincoln or Omaha,.. I know some very good paying shippers there. Most of those loads do not get posted on the boards,.. we get lists emailed to us and thats how we dispatch and pre-book our loads. You will figure it out. Or fail trying. My first 2 yrs were rough. I'd go anywhere with out a thought as to where my next load would come from. And this is a common rookie mistake. Every load you take needs to go into an area were you have another customer or broker you can rely on for a good rate to another area where you have another customer or broker with good rates. You cant blindly take the highest rate into Nogales, AZ and expect a fantastic rate coming back out,.. just not going to happen. Often times,.. it will be more profitable to take a lessor rate for a shipper and receiver that will be quick and a well paying pre-booked reload close by. The more you can keep the wheels loaded and rolling with less empty and parked time the more money you will make. Hurst
I haven’t paid over $3 gallon in almost 4 weeks. You need to get out more. Do you have a fuel card? I was in Texas and Oklahoma week before last and fuel was posted for $2.99 gal credit at a lot of places. With my fuel card.... when oil goes down the discounts can be as much as .50 gallon off of posted cash prices. I track every drop of fuel and every penny spent. I know exactly how much fuel effects my performance on a daily basis. No guessing. I also know my rate per mile and profitability on a weekly basis. I know how many loaded and empty miles exactly!!!! I know all my numbers exactly. Yes I am still pulling a profit on TOP of my salary, benefits and minimum profit margins. Maybe not every week but still up every month. I know exactly!
I can not help you there. I've never pulled a dry van. I dont know anything about dry van rates or where which lanes are better or worse for van. But you can use the same techniques, apply the same business tactics and make a good living. You have to figure out what works best for you. What works best for me may not work for you at all. Hurst
