No vans for me, on the open deck side anything and everything. I pull a step deck and thought I would be doing alot of ag equipment from Iowa. But apparently the recruiter I talked to over exaggerated on how much of that they do from here. I've gotten in pretty good with a new agent that seems to be chasing after more of this type of freight.
why do you pull open deck trailers?

Sorry, I think I read your first post wrong, I didn't already know you were into open-decking. Talk to cpape here on the forum if you're interested in hauling some green tractors and yellow construction equipment.
He's my brother, owner and head of the specialized division at Pape Transfer. I know we have some customers out in your neck of the woods. One is in Sheldon and the other in Graettinger. He could tell you anything you want to know if you really want to get into machinery hauling.

Yes we have steady work year round. We prefer you pull our trailer because our specs allow for more freight options. However, we do have ind. contractors who own their own trailer. Pulling our trailer contractors earn 68%, 75% if pulling your own.
If you want more info, check out my profile, I have some pictures of the kind of stuff we do. You can also talk to cpape like I said or check out our website http://papetransfer.com -
I just started pulling flatbed, but I love it. I feel proud when i'm finished, and it's almost always a surprise picking something up. Yesteday I thought i was picking up steel boxes and it ended up being bullet traps for an army depot. Cool stuff. And I'm getting all jacked up lugging around chains and binders.

Hey JDP, I pulled a couple backhoe loads out of JD in Dubuque this past summer. I was wondering, what do they not make at that plant? I don't think I ever seen so many different types of equipment built in one location.
SHC Thanks this. -
In Dubuque they make backhoes, crawlers, skid steers, rubber tracked dozers, and tracked feller bunchers (I think that is everything). In addition, most engineering for the Construction and Forestry Division is done in Dubuque. So they usually have a whole lot of machines they build at other plants on site.

I am new to the whole "open-deck" thing but I chose it because it is something I have always wanted to do. I take pride in my work and I like to have a challenge everyday. Anyone can put pallets on a truck, close two doors and hold a steering wheel, flatbedding takes hard work and effort. I also like the fact of getting out and actually doing some type of physical work, and as you all said, it seems like the customers are better than those at a warehouse (except for the steel mills)

Why I pull Open deck.
It's the only thing I know how to do. All I've ever done.
