When Landstar quotes a rate to their BCO's (owner operators) it is the gross rate for the load, not what is paid to the truck. The rate Landstar pays depends on whether you pull their equipment or not and the type of freight hauled. If you pull their vans you will be paid 65% of the gross rate. If the rate is $2/mile, then the BCO will be paid $1.30.

    Bingo.
    Bingo!

Most guys at Landstar will say $2-3 per mile, but that is not to the truck. They have loads that gross 50 cents on up per mile and you get 65% of that. That $2.00 a mile load is $1.30 to the truck.

I got tired of a lot of their agents and cancelled loads. I did decent money wise, but I moved on.

Btw, most of the freight you will find on Landstars board today is brokered. About 80-90%. 8-10 years ago, I've been told, it was the opposite. So now you're working for 65% of 75-90%.

The story I got was when Katrina hit, Landstar committed to many drivers to the clean up. They lost a lot of their direct shippers and most won't come back.

Only my opinion and I'm sure someone will slam me for it is Landstar is just another average company today and they just don't live up to the hype. 10 years ago, I'm sure it was much better.

And my guess would be you've been there awhile.

Anyone new will rarely see $2 a mile to the truck and a more likely average will be between $1.25-1.50 per mile. I'm also including deadhead in my figures. Another guess is you're not.

That's good for you, but anyone new coming in still won't see it.

They will once they are proven to be dependable with a history of on time every time, delivering damage free and presenting a professional image. No agent in their right mind will risk their financial well being on an unproven driver. Want to know why? thank the 90+ percent of guys out here that show up at a job site in shorts and flip flops and throw trash and bottles full of urine out on a customer's lawn.
